b. July 15, 1981

28 years ago, it was, that...

God stood over His/er table with two cookie cutters, freshly made... S/he started with one but it split right there on the pane.
Now, God doesn't make mistakes, this was all part of the plan... though S/he thought it a bit too much for the world to use both right then.
So S/he put one aside for a year, and a little more (in His/er eyes, the briefest moment),
Used one, then the other, but this story's not 'bout the second.
Cause the two cutters were the same, but different, you see
So the story of you is like the story of me
But, being different, here there's room for only one
The most beautiful shining creature, blessed by the sun
Born in July, never too shy, just a smile from this girl makes me sigh
And swoon, and bloom, and never cry, but thankfully praise all above
For blessing me with her presence, her friendship, and her love :)

Happy Birthday to you, Natalie. Belated as these wishes are, you are brighter than every star in my eyes, and prettier too, and so it's only just that I honour you.

On the subject of beauty....

Yellowknife has it's downsides... more and more it seems, these days. But, there are some shining upsides; for one, this little city is blessed to have some great artists residing here. One of my favorites, Helen Croft, creates works that are absolutely dazzling to view in person. I once heard it told that for the finer details in her works, she uses just a single hair from her paint brush.

I can only think of one image more pretty than what she paints... she is more pretty than anything :)

What's in a name?

Peek a boo!

Ha ha, just kidding. My dear Natalie asked to hear more about my habit of naming all the things in my life that I love so I went around taking pictures of all my favorite little (and not so little) ones. Allow me to introduce you to:

Nefertiti

Kikowa (pronounced kee-ko-wah)

And the Windowsill Trio:

The twins:

Mandy

and Marlie

And, don't forget Abby!

Saving the best of the plants for last, my lovely healer,

Ali

This is my lover, Indigo

And this is Piper :) She drives me where I want to go.

Oh yeah, and this one is called Nikoli! Lol, and my girl behind him there is Dejah, though I didn't name her that - I call her brat  inspiration  :D

And, though I definitely had no part in naming her at all, I had to add these photos... can you spot who I'm talking about?

The city is beautiful, but all the beauty I see is she.

Desiderata

After yesterday's forays into the world of frustration, I found myself reminded of the above... I have it posted it up on my bathroom door so that I'll see it often enough to (hopefully!) be mindful of it's words... If ever I have came across an instruction manual to a peacefull, happy life, this is it.

This pic is just for fun... the leafy accent is the only decoration in my bathroom, save for the poster on the door. In this one pic, you have the three most exciting things in there. I like having green things around, real and fake; it just makes a house feel more like a home, if you ask me :)

And now, for something more appropriate...

Did I ever tell you that K-os is one of my absolute all-time favorite artists? I have all his regular albums, and aspire to collect all the underground releases as well. Anyway, after that last performance, I thought it might be good idea to post some music that does more accurately reflect my feelings these days:

http://www.last.fm/music/k-os/_/CatDieseL

Of course, no one else can perfectly describe your feelings but you, but this has gotta be my favorite song by him, so I guess it'll do until I write my own... which I have started, but am still working on :D

The above song is currently my favorite one by him. A close second is this one:

..though, I just noticed the above recording is a little funny - there's a lot of overlapping sound at the start that aren't normally part of the song - someone's homemade remix? Anyway, it clears up after a few seconds and the rest of the song is normal.

I just love how he's reviving musical hip-hop... and his revolutionary use of guitar melody in his beats. K-os rocks!

Neon Crosses (almost)

I just love Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet. I love the music, I adore the completlely believable delivery of Shakespeare's original dialogue in such a modern setting, and I find the imageryto be stunning. One particular aspect that always struck me was the use of neon crosses in the church scenes...

One of the things I love about my apartment is something that reminds me of this scene everytime I look at it, though I must've looked at it dozens and dozens of times by now... Looking out my bedroom window, (there's my purple car on the right! - I know, you can't tell it's purple, it just looks like a shadow here... but it is!) ...

and then to the left and up, across the alley,

there's my very own almost-neon cross - it's actually backlit, not neon, but just as bright it seems :)

It's even more impressive in the blackness of deep night here (arriving by 6 pm in the middle of winter, but considerably later now that we're over the hump and sliding down that delightful slope towards spring and summer) - it shines ever so much more brightly, and is like a beacon of hope reaching through the darkness.

When I see it, I don't think of the morbidity of that final funereal scene in the movie, but of the simple symbolism of it. I think of one of my four favorite things in life - signs. I just love how people make and leave signs for each other, even something as simple as "push" or "turn left"... it's like a little simple way that we're all looking out for each other, all leaving instructions to help each other navigate, operate, achieve, or just stay safe. And this sign, to me, is a sign of compassionate people, a sign of refuge, a sign of common goals, a sign of care and nuturing. For I choose to focus on the positive side of society's endeavours, so while I can understand how humanity's corrupt tendancies in every area of civilization, including organized faith, can have caused feelings of mistrust and resentment for some when seeing this particular symbol, and while I may feel some of these feelings myself, I've always thought the use of modern lighting (ie neon or backlit) in crosses creates a new message, one that screams out "I am reaching out for you, and let the old ways and old doctrine, the old masking of meaning with trappings and tradition, be damned, for all that matters is that you are safe, and you are loved".

I should note, my particular almost-neon-cross is atop the St Patricks Catholic church, a group quite indulgent in tradition and trappings, so the above statement is probably not what they were going for when choosing that particular adornment. But that's what it says to me, and in my version of faith/spirituality, that's all that matters.

This is Ember

My teddy. I love her. I name everything important in my life - my plants, my car, my teddy. And my teddy is oh so important. I don't care that I'm a full grown adult; I truly believe that you sleep so much better when you have somthing (preferably someone!) to hold as you do so. And when you're like me, and have immense trouble sleeping sometimes, a good teddy is a God-send. I never had a teddy when I was growing up, except for this little one (it was dressed up a like a train conductor - so cute!) when I was a little one. I received Ember for my 18th birthday (or was it Christmas? They're so close together...)  you can see from the missing eye and the burn mark on her foot (I'm so sorry Ember!) that she's been through a lot with me.

that's one bad kitty

I indulged in a nap this afternoon, and was awoken to the sound of a cat mewing. Not so strange, you'd probably say, except that we don't own a cat. I opened my eyes and saw this:

Nikoli had to introduce me to "Pearl", his "new" pet kitty (newly rediscovered in his toy box).  I thought to myself, hey, I've seen this kitty before... pretty kitty.

Silly monkey :)

oops, forgot to post these...

In my last post I forgot to mention that it wasn't enough for Matty to just provide a pretty case, either... he rigged it to hold all the supplies I might need (except for the ink) - check it out :)

You can see there's extra batteries, alcohol swabs, needle-holders, and even a little dish (the upside down pop bottle cap) to hold the ink :)  Oh, and those are my very cool hippy shades sitting next to the case :) Totally unrelated, but I thought I'd point them out anyway.

Anyway! You can see the pegs he put in to hold everything in place. He put a lot of care into it :)

As I remember, the motor runs steady but gently, and the needle(s) are really, really sharp, so it actually worked quite well. Except I had a little trouble holding it steady. And I learned about being careful how you put pressure on your skin, 'cause stretching it the wrong way can really warp your sense of direction when drawing  - one minute a line is here, next minute it's there: yikes! Lol. Yea, learning! :)

Speaking of which, I need to be getting back to my guitar... I've got a lot of studying to do, I have some new things in mind.. but no promises!

:)

I've always liked tattoos. When it's well done, a tattoo can be very beautiful. And I deeply admire the skills of a great tattoo artist - I mean, there's no erasing when you're in this business. I have to admit, I also always thought it would an ideal job - sit around in a shop surrounded by this great, cool, modern and classic art, listening to tunes, b-s'ing with your coworkers and drawing.
But you'd have to be really good, or it would suck.

I used to talk about this with my buddy Matt. So much in fact, that he decided he was going to build me a tattoo gun. He's pretty awesome like that - I miss him a lot since he moved away. But, getting back to point, he was good on his word.  He built this for me, from scrap parts - he's pretty clever :)

He even decided that the gun wasn't enough, it had to come with somthing nice to carry it in:

So he swiped this little handpainted box from his Mom (she was pretty PO'd at him when she found out, and I felt bad, but then he told her to stop making him feel bad 'cause he was tryna do something nice, so she forgave him, lol.)  and he added a latch, again, from scratch :)

So, I have this to always remember him by. I think it's probably the coolest thing anyone has ever given me :D  Sadly, it's in need of repair, so it's been sitting on my bedroom shelf for some time now.... you can see the unused India Ink I stocked up on, patiently waiting for me to get a round tuit and fix the darn thing.

Lucky me though, I did get to use it one time before the wiring came loose for good. It took a while for me to decide what I image I would use for my double-first tattoo - "double-first" because not only was it the first tattoo I ever put on my body, but it was also the first tatttoo I ever drew! It had to be something simple, something small, and something that meant something! Something that would mean something for the rest of my life... then when it came to me, it was so obvious that I couldn't believe I didn't think of it right away...

 A double note.
A very simple symbol of my love for music,
doubled 'cause it's my double-first :)

In case you're wondering, it's on my knee.

Btw, until tonight, I had no idea just how difficult it is to photograph your own knee.

Encore Please!

Let's get them all in one place, eh? I know you've seen this before, but in the interest of organization and centralization, here's an encore :)

(this video may take a few seconds to load.... or, if your connection sucks a** like the one at my work, it won't load at all. Sorry :P )

Antidisestablishmentarianism. There, now I've said it.

lol :)

floating in happy :) :) :)

One Cool Dude

Nikoli and I went to Caribou Carnival this past weekend. It was kinda cold out, but we braved the weather to attend the festivities. I have to admit, there wasn't too much exciting - a bunch of tents out on the frozen lake behind city hall isn't quite as stimulating as, say, music and rides and flashing lights, but it was a good excuse to get out of the house all the same. And I got some great pictures :)

After we had a bite to eat and played some games in the kid's "tent" - actually the dome you can see in the center of the above pic - we hiked over to the museum and had a look around. I took the above shot from the window of the aviation exhibit room :) That's pretty much the whole carnival site. Surprisingly enough, lots of people were coming and going.

Well, lots for Yellowknife. Lol.  Anyway, it was a great day. I can only think of one thing that could have made it better... one person, that is :)
